Yesterday I gave a little background on Mark and how he was on his way to climb the corporate ladder but as we could tell ignorance isn’t always bliss in the business world as shown in the infamous Office Space movie. So the question is how did Mark lose his job? Well, before we get there I need to tell you the situation first.
Mark was far from pompous and was actually quite humble in his projects. I recall a project that I was involved in with him and several others while there were coworkers who have been with the company for 10+ years Mark was somehow elected the manager of the project. Then when it came to presenting the project he only took minor credit. Honestly I was dumbfouned - I thought he would take as much as credit as possible, without going over board. Yet, he was eager to give credit where it was actually due.
It was from this point on that I thought he would prove to be a great supervisor. Given the fact that the one over my particular department tends to forget your name even when I’ve worked for him for several years. That’s a topic for another time though.
Getting back to Mark. Even as I write this and going over his work history and personality I still can’t believe his desk his empty. So allow me to get to the situation so we can all get on the same page.
Every few months the senior managers come around the office from the golf course to see what the underlings are up to. We deem this “Show Case” day because they actually go to each individual manager and their teams to see what exactly they’ve been up since last time. This is when our managers walk with their supervisors from cubicle to cubicle showing us off as if we were part of a dog show. One of these times I’m just waiting for my boss to start checking my ears and mouth and then give me a dog treat or something.
Well, during one of these special visits of course our supervisor came to Mark’s desk, located two cubicles from mine, and started showing him off. He was literally beaming yet with humility. This was his chance that he was waiting for - making his mark on senior management. The banter went back and forth and that’s when Mark was invited to lunch with all the managers.
He did it. He won the trophy!
Of course Mark accepted and they headed off to the over-priced restaurant where they spent the remaining of the afternoon. From what I am told (from Mark) he made small talk with management and was asked about the company, the process, and of course the management.
So, Mark answered truthfully and only in certain situations is the truth truly acceptable. Apparently this was not one of them sadly.
